The shop held a Poetry Competition to celebrate National Poetry Day on October 5th: the shop window was full of poems for a week. Most of the prize-winners have collected their prizes now but there are still a few books waiting to be chosen. The Poetry Competition attracted a huge number of entries, particularly for the 7-11 category. Entries from local primary schools were excellent - Woodstock, Wootton-by-Woodstock, Bladon, Combe and Stonesfield all participated, as well as Cokethorpe School. The winner was Tom Sansom of Wootton-by-Woodstock and the winner of the 11-18 section was Alice Sholl. It was such a pleasure to receive poems by post instead of bills! We will certainly repeat the competition next year.
The thick smell of sugar and sweetness curling all around the town.
Rusty old sign with Quality Street written on it
Under which a scruffy dirty young lad lived. Arthur was his name, Arthur Sherbert.
Arthur Sherbert dirty lemon. Not a lucky boy. He hated sweets.
His house looked as if a bomb had hit it.
It was a freaky day. He had a dream
in a bed like discarded wrappers.
It was a nightmare. A nightmare like no other.
Molten liquorice sweating under a hard-boiled sun
Arthur trudging through its heavy sticky rays
to a gingerbread shop that comes into sight
with a gingerbread man waving a candy stick.
Arthur stumbled through the door, staring in horror.
It was a sweet shop.
Behind the till a man shouting at his assistant
who was stacking candy hooked on racks.
He turned to look at Arthur with one beastly bulls eye staring out into his.
It was Jeremiah Fudge and his evil master Toffee Surprise.
As they lifted their paper bags towards him
He woke in a gingerbread sweat.

Welcome to The Woodstock Bookshop
The shop opened in May 2008 and is on the main road in Woodstock, just next to the bus stop. We can supply most books to order by the next day and have several thousand books in stock: to order books ring or email the shop. We have a large selection of children's books and are happy to advise and recommend. We can also supply second-hand and out-of-print titles. We offer discounts for school orders and for book clubs and have a free local delivery service.
We were on the regional shortlist for Independent Bookshop of the Year in 2009, 2013 and 2017, and listed in the Independent's Top 50 UK Bookshops.
BOOK GROUPS AND BOOKSHOP TALKS
are both suspended during the pandemic. We hope to start again as soon as it is safe to do so.
WOODSTOCK POETRY FESTIVAL
The bookshop started and runs Woodstock Poetry Festival, a completely independent festival that has now been running for 8 years.
The Woodstock Literature Society also holds an excellent series of monthly talks - do visit their website for further details.
